gout Generally, gout occurs when uric crystals accumulate around a joint. These crystals are typically formed when there are high levels of uric acid in the blood. The body produces uric acid so that it can break down purines. Purines are naturally occurring substances found in the body as well as in certain foods such as organ meats including sweetbreads and vegetables such as mushrooms.

Typically, the uric acid in the body dissolves on its own and passes through the kidney during urination. However, in some cases, the body does not properly regulate uric acid either producing too much or not excreting enough. When this happens, a variety of medical problems can arise such as gout, kidney stones, hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid levels), or even kidney failure. However, gout is the most common result which often leads to pain, swelling, and redness in and around joints.

Gout affects men much more than it does women. In fact, gout occurs about nine times as often in men often occurring between the ages of 40 and 50. There are over three million Americans who currently suffer from gout.

Hyperuricemia, on the other hand, is generally considered a warning sign of gout. However, the direct relationship between the two diseases is still unclear. In fact, only a small portion of those infected with hyperuricemia actually develop gout.
